Colby Alan Ferrin was set apart as a full-time missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (La Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días) on 20 August 2013. He was called to serve in the Mexico City East Mission. During his final week at the Missionary Training Center (MTC), as he was preparing to go to Mexico City (Ciudad de México), he wrote the following as part of his blog entry dated 27 September 2013:
This week has been the same as the other weeks, in that we have enough class and study to pass a semester of college. How much I’ve been able to learn from the amazing people here is incredible. There are spiritual experiences every day that come from simply studying the scriptures, learning Spanish at a rate not humanely possible, and listening to devotionals that constantly touch the soul.
Now, back from his mission, Colby is at home in Ogden, Utah and preparing to go to Brigham Young University (BYU), all the while following his passion of making music. On his YouTube channel he describes himself as “an aspiring comedy, rapping, piano-playing, singing/songwriting artist.” He even published a music video on 22 August 2015 called “Before and After Mission Rap” which is a follow-up to his “Pre-Missionary Rap” which he published on 19 August 2013. He commented about the writing of the song and his future plans in a Facebook post on 22 August 2015:
The first verse was recorded in August 2013, the second verse was recorded just barely in August of 2015. My thoughts and feelings put into a song, before and after serving a 2 year full time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church). I served as a missionary in Mexico City for 2 years; now I’m excited to be back again and continue making some music that hopefully some people will listen to and enjoy! Love you all!
To create his music and edit his voice Colby uses a USB microphone, keyboard, and GarageBand. When he first started making music videos he recorded parodies, but later moved on to recording his own original music. He writes the lyrics, composes the music, produces the videos, mixes and edits the songs himself with some help from friends as cameramen and a few tweaks here and there.
No matter what his course in life may be, Colby will always have a missionary’s heart and a testimony of and love for the Savior. At the conclusion of his mission, in a blog entry dated 27 July 2015 he stated:
My missionary nametag is written on my heart forever, and whether I have a physical one or not does not change the name that has been engraved upon my heart forever. I shared my testimony in my letter last week. What more can I say? Christ lives. God is His mortal Father and our spiritual Father. Joseph Smith is a true prophet of Him. The Book of Mormon is His word. Thomas S. Monson is the living prophet today. I know all this and gladly give my life to the declaration of these truths, of THE truth. I love the Savior. He is my personal Friend. Any success or change that I have been able to experience in myself and others is because of Him. I love Him.
