In America, the idea of exchanging hand-made valentines probably began in the early 1700s. By the 1840s, Esther A. Howland, known as the “Mother of the Valentine” began selling the first mass-produced valentines. Her elaborate creations were made with real lace, ribbons, and colorful pictures known as “scrap.” Per the Greeting Card Association, approximately 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are sent yearly, making Valentine’s Day the second most popular card-sending holiday after Christmas (an estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent for Christmas). And approximately 85 percent of all valentines are purchased by women.
