Foreign Figures

Foreign FiguresForeign Figures is an Alternative/Pop band comprised of Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from Orem, Utah who want to bring a message of hope to the world. The group formed in July 2014, when brothers, Eric and Steve Michels got together for a jam session. Bassist Eric Espinel and guitarist Seth Dunshee joined them. Jonny Tanner initially joined the band as the sound engineer, but soon became guitarist and synth player. Eric Michels chose the name of the band.

In time, the group of four close friends who connect musically and share a bonded friendship with one another decided to turn their passion for creating music into something more than a simple hobby. They wrote music, invested in their equipment, and introduced a new level of talent to their energy-driven live performances as they played for local shows. Before ever releasing a single album, they had amassed a steady loyal following. After winning multiple competitions and gaining local sponsorships, the band headed into the studio, self-producing their fiercely emotional and energetic debut 6 song EP titled Come Alive. The EP was released in March 2015 in a concert at Velour Live Music Gallery in Provo, Utah.

The band also created a video to go with their debut EP.  In addition to the EP, they sold USB bracelets that included videos, album art, lyrics, and .wav and .mp3 files of their music. The local response to Come Alive was immense. The band sold out Utah’s most popular local music venue in under a week for their album release. However, it was not just Utah that responded favorably to their music, but half of the digital downloads that Foreign Figures has seen are from outside the United States in 20 different countries.

During their first year together, they won the 2014 Battle of the Bands at The Wall. In 2015, they won the 2015 Stereo Room Battle of the Bands and were finalists as KSL 5’s “Garage to Glory” band. At the 2015 Utah Music Awards Foreign Figures was nominated for Best New Artist and won Best Music Video.

Foreign Figures has toured has toured regionally and secured multiple licensing deals, but they plan for an even busier 2016 – releasing a full-length album and national touring. They are as serious about connecting with people as they are about growing their fan base, and with the world’s attention, they plan to take their music to all who can hear.

As of January 2016, the band members are Eric Michels – frontman, Steve Michels – drums, Seth Dunshee – bass and vocals, and Jonny Tanner – guitarist, synth player, and sound engineer. Eric Espinel left the band for a career with Google. The band has also produced a single, “Fire,” a second EP titled Ocean Tide, and a new album called Paradigm.

Steve Michels, Eric Espinel, Seth Dunshee, and Jonny Tanner served full-time missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Chile. Eric Michels served a full-time mission in the Ukraine.
