He began playing the piano at a young age. He soon discovered that taking piano lessons were not his forte, and decided that he would figure out how to play on his own. Thus, every performance is unique because he does not read music. Being a self-taught musician has proven favorable for him as he has become well-known on both YouTube and Facebook, and has garnered a virtual international audience.
At the age of 16 most boys are dreaming of having their first car, but for David, he was faced with another decision – a car or a keyboard. He made the choice to use the money that he had saved to buy a keyboard. That decision proved to be wise as the keyboard that he purchased has served as the voice for the music that he has in his heart. He still owns and uses the keyboard which can be seen in all of his videos.
David is an independent artist and records under the label of BeardedPiano. He joined YouTube on 16 November 2014, and as of early June 2016, his channel has over 14,000 subscribers with his videos viewed more than 1.7 million times.
The encouragement that he receives from his wife, Molly, and their three sons, Isaac, Samuel, and Ezra, motivates him to do what he loves doing and sharing it with the world. According to his Facebook bio, he is “inspired by the familiar sources in his life: his family, great classical music, and (most importantly) getting handed a sick baby and being told to get it to go to sleep.” In fact, he lists his three personal interests as playing the piano, putting children to sleep, and growing a beard.
Some of the artists that he enjoys listening to, and who have influenced him include Yanni, Jim Brickman, Kevin Bluemel, Jennifer Thomas, and Paul Cardall.
His latest music video called “Rainbow Baby” was published on his YouTube channel on 2 June 2016 and has received over 14,000 views. About the video, he stated on his official website, “A Rainbow Baby is a child born after a previous infant loss. He or she is a symbol of hope restored, the sunshine after a storm.” He continues, “Although my wife and I have never personally lost one of our children, we’ve wept alongside our brothers, sisters and close friends who have. At the time “Lullaby” went viral, my niece Huntley had just been born. She is the fourth Rainbow Baby born into my immediate family.”
David is currently working on his first piano album comprised of lullaby songs. He has said, “I love composing music. I love the way music evokes such a range of emotions within our hearts. I love that my music resonates with so many listeners, and I’ve been building a Piano Lullaby Album full of songs to bring you more of the peace, joy, or whatever you find nestled between the notes.”
