BYU Vocal Point - When She Loved MeOn 21 June 2016, BYU Vocal Point, a nine-member a cappella group at Brigham Young University, released their newest music video “When She Loved Me,” from Disney/Pixar’s “Toy Story 2.” According to a 7 June 2016 Instagram post, this video is a more serious video than any that they have ever released. The post on their Facebook page the day of the release read, “Grab the tissues! Remember when… Jessie sang this song? We hope you’ll share this with someone who knows this feeling.”

According to Disney.wikia.com, the song “When She Loved Me” is written by Randy Newman and sung by Sarah McLachlan “from the perspective of Jessie about how she was once loved by a young girl named Emily, but eventually forgotten as she grew older. Woody is moved by the story as Jessie ends it with, “You never forget kids like Emily or Andy…but they forget you.” The song, listed as the second track on the “Toy Story 2 Soundtrack,” received the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media at the 43rd Grammy Awards.

David Ross, the Marketing Director for BYU Vocal Point, gave some of the backstories of Vocal Point’s selection of this particular song as their new music video.

The story begins with Jordan Hale, a member of the group. One night as he was enjoying a quiet dinner with his wife at a classy restaurant, the piano player started playing this song. As he listened, he became inspired to arrange the song for Vocal Point.

Cody Phillips _ BYU Vocal PointRoss also relates that there is also an interesting story behind the flowers seen at the beginning of the video. The night before the video for “When She Loved Me” was shot, Cody Phillips, also a member of Vocal Point, was walking home and before entering his apartment, he glanced over at the dumpster and saw three vases filled with beautifully-dried flowers. Thinking that the flowers would make a great addition to the video, he threw them in his car. As it turned out, everyone was pleased with how they looked on the set, so they used them for the video.

In a 22 June 2016 Instagram video post, Cody refers to the flowers as the “miracle flowers.” He comments that “they were a great visual representation of something that was once beautiful, but with time had become faded – and that’s exactly the story of our new video: “When She Loved Me.”

The seven other 2015-2016 members of BYU Vocal Point are Devin Flake, Adam Heimigner, Kyle Lemperle, Spencer Myler, Carl Prince, Bryce Romney, and Logan Shelton. The single for “When She Loved Me” is available for download on iTunes. As of this writing, 22 June 2016, the video on YouTube has garnered more than 17,000 views. The video is also posted on the BYU Vocal Point Instagram account.
